Protecting Yourself From Heat Stroke
The chances are very good that even if you have heard about heat stroke and how dangerous it can be, you may still be unaware of some of the signs and symptoms that you should be looking out for. Heat stroke can be a life threatening health issue and it is very important that you treat it properly and quickly once you recognize some of the signs. Unfortunately, this is a condition that can impact people of all ages and can come on very quickly so it is important to educate yourself as it may save your life or the life of someone else around you.
What is Heat Stroke?
To better understand heat stroke and how to avoid it, you should know that it generally occurs when a person is unable to produce the right amount of sweat to help them keep their body temperature down. In cases of extreme heat and high humidity along with continuous activity while in the sun, anyone is susceptible to heat stroke. If you are involved in one or or more of these situations at one time, you are elevating your chances of heat stroke even further.
What are The Symptoms?
Some of the symptoms that are recognizable for heat stroke are quite similar to people who are experiencing severe dehydration. Generally speaking, these two conditions will often go hand in hand. A few of the symptoms that you will want to look out for will include headache, confusion, fatigue, dizziness, skin that appears to be flushed and even seizures. In any situation where it seems as though a person around you is developing heat stroke, it is important that you do all that you can to get them medical attention as soon as possible. While you are in route to the hospital or you are waiting for an ambulance to arrive, you can try to help them by having them lay down, giving them water, elevating their feet or even trying to cool them down with a fan or a cool, wet cloth.
How To Avoid Heat Stroke?
Whenever you are going to be in any situation where the temperature is high and you will be moving around and active, it is imperative that you try to do all that you can to prevent heat stroke from happening. Limiting your exposure to extreme heat by taking breaks indoors will be a great help. In addition to that, it is important that you try to keep yourself as hydrated as you possibly can with either water or sports drinks that are high in electrolytes. Avoid beverages such as soda, alcohol, coffee or tea that are known to dehydrate the body even further.
If at all possible, you will want to make sure that you help to avoid heat stroke by wearing lightweight clothing or even a hat to help shield you from the sun as much as possible. A lot of people also like to bring along a spray bottle with them when they will be out in the heat to help mist their skin to remain hydrated and cool. All in all, a little bit of knowledge and a good amount of protection can go a long way when you are trying to protect yourself from heat stroke.
