Besides Pain and Fever relief, Aspirin can prevent cancer!
Commonly thought of being used only for Pain & Fever relief, it has been reported recently that Aspirin can prevent colon cancer and heart disease. A recently published report recommends daily aspirin use in the people of between 50 and 59 years with risk of colon cancer and heart disease, although some experts are critical with the recommendations. However, there are hard facts that can validate such claims.
The beneficial effects of aspirin use on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and some types of cancer are well known. It is a commonly, widely available medication that can be purchased on different medical supplies stores all over the world, it is an item that is commonly found on medicine & health supplies. But now for the first time a group of experts has decided to officially recommend their daily consumption in those between 50 and 59 years with greater risk of heart disease, stroke and colorectal cancer. This report was published by the Preventive Services Task Force, they stated that people in the mentioned age group can see a diminished risk of these conditions during a 10-year span, besides being commonly used as pain & fever relief.
In 2009 this very same group of experts had already recommended aspirin to prevent cardiovascular disease in people without the risk of hemorrhagic complications, but now it is the first time that is also recommended for colorectal cancer. The inclusion of cancer is based on the results of four clinical trials that have demonstrated the effects of aspirin, the same medication found on medical supplies stores. In one of them has been seen that aspirin reduced the number of strokes in a 22% and the overall mortality rate in a 6%; another of the trials showed that aspirin reduced the number of deaths from colorectal cancer by 33% and reduces the incidence of colon cancer by 40 %, even though he had to have taken aspirin at least five to 10 years to obtain the protection. And another study, focused on the risks of daily consumption of aspirin, observed a very modest increase in the stomach bleeding and the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.
This new recommendation of aspirin use is directed specifically for people who have a risk of myocardial infarction or stroke higher than a 10% or more during a period of at least 10 years. The risk shall be calculated on the basis of their cholesterol and blood pressure levels. The main impact that it can make culturally is that this medication is affordable and can be easily obtained in many medical supplies stores under the pain & fever relief.
The document does not notes, however, that the benefit is not similar to the at-risk persons between the ages of 60 and 69 years, by those who do not recommend as a standard, and recognize that the decisions must be individual. In regard to the age of 50 years or older than 70, the panel of experts acknowledges that it does not have sufficient data to make any recommendation, but this recently discovery can make a big impact on how we view aspirin use in our daily lives as more than just a pain & fever relief medication.
