The downside of being a workaholic
Being a hard worker is a compliment that people have come to value deeply. Employers love to have a hardworking employee on their staff, as they are the type of people that you would want around in the office. However, like many other activities in life, when working long hours can take a toll on our physical health. If you are one of those people, you should know that in addition to take the time of their social and family life, the extra hours are also damaging their arteries. The risk of a cerebrovascular accident, or stroke and of a myocardial infarction is higher among those who work 55 hours or more each week than those who adjust their workday to the 35 or 40 hours.
Mika Kivimäki, professor of epidemiology at University College London, United Kingdom, lead a study that published a study recently in which two groups of people were evaluated. On the one hand, her team analyzed data from 603,838 men and women of Europe, the United States and Australia, who were followed for an average of 8.5 years. On the other hand, made a similar assessment of the results obtained in 17 works that participated in the 528,908 men and women that were evaluated during 7.2 years.
These studies were published on The Lancet, a British publication, and both reached the same conclusion. Excessive amount of work can have alarming negative effects on the arteries.
In the first group it was found that excessive work caused an increase of 13% of the risk of a heart attack (either a episode, a trip to the hospital or even death) in those people who worked 55 or more hours in a week, compared with those who had a day of 35 or 40 hours. The data of the second group was also eye-catching, as those who had an excess of hours worked per week had an increased risk of having a stroke of 33%, these people were 1.3 times more likely to suffer from this problem stroke than those who spent 15 or 20 hours less of their lives at work each week.
Now, this report is not mean to be an apology to slacking off. It is, however, intended to raise awareness that these excessive behaviors can be detrimental to your health in a more impactful way that it was once believed. It is a good reason to appeal for a better labor distribution. With so much unemployment does not make sense that groups of individuals are working 14 hours while others are unemployed. Maybe a culture shift is called-for.
