Drug Free Pain Management Rehabilitation

Many people deal with pain by popping a pill into their mouths. We’re not about to judge them or criticize them here, though. If we were in their shoes we would also wish for the pain to go away as quick and easily as it could be possible. However, there is a problem with pain management drugs, and it’s the fact that they can easily create a habit in people taking them. We have all heard cautionary tales about athletes and sports stars growing dependent to painkillers after suffering an injury. But he way the human mind usually works we just go, ‘that would never happen to me.’
The Pain Ladder
The Pain Ladder is a term coined by the World Health Organization to describe which drugs should be prescribed for which type of pain. For example, mild pain warrants either paracetamol or a NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). Mild to moderate pain opens the door for combining paracetamol with either a NSAID or with a weak opioid, as they would bring more relief together than separately. Moderate to severe pain is where things get serious. First of all, it has to be determined whether the pain is acute or chronic before a medication is settled on. Acute pain medicine has to deal with a quick pain onset, while chronic pain drugs must be able to relieve recurring, long lasting pain.

The terminology for severe pain management drugs itself can tip you off to what we mentioned before about dependence. There’s morphine, and opioids such as oxycontin, fentanyl, and methadone, just to name a few. Some medications are more likely to create addiction than others, such as cannabinoids (aka medicinal marihuana). We’re not knocking on the analgesic effect of these drugs, which is actually substantial. What we’re aiming at is that they could leave the user with two problems instead of one.
Fortunately, there is a drug-free alternative for pain management rehab. There are several types of electrotherapy that can bring relief to musculoskeletal pain, as well as rehabilitate injured muscles. Two of those technologies are known as TENS and EMS. Both TENS and EMS machines (or a combo of the two) are available at Discount Medical supplies. Electrotherapy can save you a lot of money as well as a great deal of grief as a result of pain medication dependence.
