September is World Alzheimer’s Month
Around the world 44 million people are living with Alzheimer’s or a similar dementia and according to Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) this number is on the raise to reach over 135 million people in the year 2050. September is World Alzheimer’s Month and the 21st of that month is World Alzheimer’s Day. All dedicated to raise awareness, provide information and fight every social and cultural stigmas.
This month was launched in 2012 as a decision to expand the awareness campaigns all over the globe in the month that already contains the world Alzheimer’s Day which was picked by ADI back in 1994 when they launched the opening of ADI’s annual conference in Edinburgh on September 21st of that same year.
During this time many people related to Alzheimer’s and other dementias unite around the main purpose of sending a strong message to world leaders, governments and lawmakers about this terrible condition, matters of prevention and support to find a way to eradicate it. While doing this, the message also contains important information for the general public in regards to awareness on a subject that is becoming larger by the minute in a population that grows older.
The main topics that World Alzheimer’s Month wishes to focus on is the serious implication this mental disease has on each country’s health services along with the need to educate and put an end to all misinterpretations about Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Different organizations dedicated to help those affected with dementia and others advocated to find a cure create many activities to seek more public attention and financial support. Among the common activities seen during this month you will see media appearances, free screenings, memory walks and a great variety of informational campaigns designed by all Alzheimer's organizations across the globe. You can join any of these movements or create your own and advertise it at your local Alzheimer’s office.
On September 2014 the theme will be “Dementia: Can we reduce the risk?”, dedicating all attention to channeling efforts to reduce all risks of developing the disease with many activities focused on providing a better healthy brain lifestyle.
