Of course that that is all theoretically speaking; in practice users of TENS units experience the true power of these devices differently. Ideally speaking, the electrical current that a TENS machine delivers must not be so strong that it causes discomfort. In that sense, these units are perfectly safe, and within that parameter of safety, they are also powerful enough to relieve pain during the course and stimulation, and afterwards as well in some cases.

As a result, the user experiences the strength and power of the TENS unit as pain relief; in other words they perceive the effects of that power if not necessarily the power itself. It could be said that the most powerful TENS unit is that which knows its own strength. That is not to say that TENS machines are sentient, though; only that they are designed in such a way that the intensity and stimulation can be adjusted so as to channel the output more effectively. In other words, you don’t even need the full power of a TENS device to achieve results, you only need use it wisely. Of course, electrode placement plays a big part there as well.

As a summary, though it almost goes without saying, remember that just like results may vary from one user to another, so treatment is not necessarily the same for everybody. The intensity, duration, and frequency of treatment depend on the cause of pain and severity of symptoms, as well as other individual factors. In any case, though, you can be sure that any TENS unit you buy will have more than enough juice to meet your requirements (if that weren’t the case, you should probably ask your doctor about a different treatment approach; if a TENS unit can’t do the job, then electrotherapy is clearly not the answer).
